The Weee Directive

The WEEE Directive

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment legislation came into effect in 2005 and holds manufacturers and retailers accountable for taking back and recycling all returned electrical and electronic equipment. Consumers will be able to return goods free of charge.

Designed to tackle the fast increasing waste stream of electrical and electronic equipment, the directive is designed to limit the total quantity of waste disposed. In addition, the directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment such as various heavy metals and flame retardants from 2008 and aims to incentivise companies to design electronic and electrical equipment in an environmental and efficient way.
